The following contains spoilers for Agatha for life episode 1, “Seekest Thou the Road,” now streaming on Disney+.
One of the craziest moments in Agatha for lifeThe premiere was all Kathryn Hahn's idea.
Speaking to Variety, showrunner Jac Schaeffer opened up about the shocking scene in which Agatha, after breaking free from Wanda Maximoff’s spell, confronts a Westview neighbor about how long she’s been stuck in town without any clothes on. Agatha was originally supposed to perform this scene in a robe, but Hahn questioned her character’s thought process at the time, asking, “Would she take the robe? I don’t think she would take the robe. I have a feeling she wouldn't really care about being naked in front of the neighbors..”
Would he grab the robe? I don't think he would grab the robe.
Schaeffer appreciated the suggestion, revealing, “I told her, 'This is the most beautiful idea I've ever heard.' Kathryn did so much work, and she did a lot of nudity and stuff, and so I also felt it was very subversive to include Kathryn Hahn's nudity in the MCU..”
Hahn also weighed in on the decision to show her naked, believing it reflected Agatha's state of mind as a witch grappling with her inability to do magic. “I thought it was beautiful to see her stripped down, literally, as much as possible, which spoke to her helplessness in the present moment,” she said, later noting that Agatha “has been stripped of all her power at this point in the series. I mean, she really had nothing at that point, and so it was about illustrating that gap between that moment and her finding her power again.” AgateThe first episode also briefly leaned on WandaVisionThe aesthetics of the homage to the TV sitcom, with Agatha finding herself trapped in the role of a Easttown Sea— complete with an introductory sequence to a crime drama — before regaining his original memories.
Agatha All Along talks to Agatha again 3 years later
Set three years later WandaVision, Agatha for life follows Agatha and her makeshift coven of witches as they attempt to navigate the “Witches Road,” a dimensional plane capable of restoring her lost power. While the premiere featured several WandaVision supporting cast, including Debra Jo Rupp as the final member of the coven, also introduced several new characters, including Aubrey Plaza as a witch from Agatha's past and Joe Locke as an unnamed “Teen” whose identity is magically obscured during conversations. The show also went through several working title announcements prior to its release, something Schaeffer did as a way to confuse viewers as to what Agatha would do in-universe, describing the rationale for these titles as “just Agatha up to her tricks.”
While Agatha's future at Marvel remains unclear, Hahn has revealed her interest in teaming up with the Fantastic Four as a nod to her character's Marvel history. Hahn's WandaVision co-star Elizabeth Olsen, meanwhile, recently starred alongside Carrie Coon and Natasha Lyonne, who will also appear in Fantastic Four: First Steps — in Azazel Jacobs His three daughtersrecently premiered on Netflix.
