A deeply subversive driving game, Deliver At All Costs will have you tearing apart 1950s America

The year is 1959. The Cold War is in full swing, television is taking over, and environments are completely destructible. What a time to be alive. Deliver At All Costs is a chaotic courier sim set in the heady days of yore, as the player drives around a “semi-open” US town taking on a variety of odd jobs. “From delivering a giant Marlin to dismantling an atomic bomb teetering on the brink of detonation,” the developers say, “always expect the unexpected.” You can see why in the trailer below, where the player rips through a men's clothing store and destroys the entire building. Yep, this looks like a good time.

The wreckers' mistakes are likely to cause some trouble with the law and the local townspeople. “They will respond to your actions in the most unpredictable way,” the developers say. It's being made by Swedish studio Far Out Games, a group of students who founded a studio a few years ago to “turn our school project into our dream game,” and are now published by Konami. Good job, guys.

There's a story to go along with it all. You play as deliveryman Winston Green, described as “a hapless courier with a fiery temper and a mysterious past.” There's hinted to be some intrigue as the cargo gets increasingly wilder and the idyllic town of St. Monique begins to reveal its secrets.

I think my favorite feature is when the citizens you've annoyed grab onto the back and sides of your vehicle with their legs as the player takes another tight corner. Oh my, they're really annoyed. You'll be able to abandon your car and ride around on Winston's legs, GTA-style, and unlock character upgrades like a utility bike. Your car can also be totaled (as the player is seen getting hit hard by a boulder in the trailer), but there's a way to get it back.

It looks part Crazy Taxi, part old-school GTA. Having recently rediscovered the joy of wreaking havoc in an old car in Wreckfest (one of our best racing games), I'm all for a bit more vehicular destruction. There's no release date yet, but we'll let you know.
