7 Dragon Ball Characters Broly Can’t Defeat (& 7 He Can)

Broly is a Saiyan from Universe 7 in Dragon Ball and one of the most powerful ones to have ever existed. Born on Planet Vegeta, Broly was exiled due to having too much power right from birth. He has spent most of his life on Planet Vampa and grew stronger there. As a Legendary Super Saiyan, Broly belongs to the group of warriors who come into existence once every millennium.

As seen in Dragon Ball Super: Broly, Broly possesses tremendous power that knows no bounds. Despite his devastating strength, however, Broly is a noted pacifist. And yet, his skill of growing through battles is incredible, and that’s why he’s one of the most fearsome fighters in the series. However, some Dragon Ball characters could give him a run for his money.

Updated on September 19, 2024, by Antonio Samson: Broly is one of the strongest characters in all of Dragon Ball and a fan-favorite character. However, even though he was one of the strongest characters when he was first introduced, the power levels of the Dragon Ball universe have increased tenfold. So how does he stack up today? This article was updated to include more characters and to meet CBR’s editorial and formatting standards.

Characters Who Can Defeat Broly

Gogeta Is Far More Capable Than Both Goku And Vegeta

Gogeta smirking with a golden glow around him

Main Abilities

Stardust Smasher

Ultimate Impact

Gogeta is one of the strongest characters in Dragon Ball, created by the fusion of Goku and Vegeta. Being a Metamoran fusion, it goes without saying that Gogeta is far more capable than both Goku and Vegeta. After all, he’s the combination of two of the most powerful characters in anime history. When Gogeta appears, it’s usually a sign that the battle has reached a critical point, and even the most dangerous foes should be wary of his overwhelming strength.

In the Broly movie, Dragon Ball Super: Broly, Gogeta was shown fighting against Broly. It was quickly evident that there was a massive power difference between the two. Broly, while strong and durable, was absolutely no match for Gogeta Blue. Despite Broly’s incredible raw power and ability to improve during a fight, Gogeta’s precise control and mastery of techniques like the Stardust Smasher proved too much for the berserker Saiyan. In a drawn-out battle, Broly would run out of steam long before this particular opponent. If the fight had continued, Gogeta likely would have finished Broly with a devastating final move, showing the true gap in their abilities.

Vegito Might Actually Be Stronger Than Gogeta

Vegito Blue uses the Final Kamehameha in Dragon Ball Super.

Main Abilities

Complete Shot

Big Bang Flash

Vegito is another fusion of Goku and Vegeta, but this one makes use of the Potara earrings. This means that Vegito is just as strong as Gogeta, if not stronger. He was able to fight and overwhelm Fused Zamasu in battle, which just goes to show how powerful he is. Vegito’s creation is always a dramatic moment, signaling that both Goku and Vegeta have realized that a situation is far too dangerous to face alone.

Since Gogeta would be able to deal with Broly without much trouble, it can be easily assumed that the same would be the case for Vegito. Vegito’s abilities, such as his combination of Goku’s strategy and Vegeta’s aggression, would likely make him even more effective in battle. Fans haven’t seen Vegito and Broly actually fight, but Vegito likely has the upper hand in any duel that might arise between these two powerhouses. Given Vegito’s track record against beings like Zamasu, it’s likely that his strength would eclipse Broly’s, pushing the legendary Saiyan to his limits.

Beerus Is A Literal God Of Destruction

Main Abilities

Beerus’ Counterattack

Beerus’ Judgment

Beerus is the God of Destruction of Universe 7, which is impressive by itself. In addition, he wields mind-blowing powers like Beerus’ Judgment. He was able to defeat Goku in his Super Saiyan God form without even using his real powers, which shows how frightening Beerus really is. Even when Beerus is not taking a fight seriously, his raw power and authority make him an opponent that can defeat nearly any challenger.

Although Broly is commonly assumed to be stronger than Beerus, it can’t be denied that Beerus has extra powers up his sleeve, such as Hakai. Hakai allows Beerus to erase anything from existence, making him more dangerous than even the most powerful mortal fighters. If that’s not convincing enough, Beerus’ status as a God of Destruction ultimately gives him the edge over pretty much anyone — including Broly. Beerus’ experience and knowledge as a god also mean he can handle situations with a level of finesse and wisdom Broly lacks, adding another advantage to the destructive deity.

Jiren Could Overwhelm Goku’s Newest Powerful Form

Main Abilities

Power Impact

Invisible Eye Blast

One of the members of the Pride Troopers, Jiren hails from Universe 11. He made himself known as one of the strongest in the series during the Tournament of Power. Jiren’s strength surpassed that of even the Gods of Destruction, and he could also match Goku’s Ultra Instinct in a fight. Jiren’s combat philosophy is built on overwhelming power and resilience, making him a nearly unstoppable force on the battlefield.

Since then, Jiren is likely to have grown stronger and has plenty more power to send Broly’s way. If Goku’s ever-increasing strength couldn’t topple Jiren, Broly’s wild approach to battle might face the same difficulty. Broly is unquestionably powerful, but even he won’t be able to hold his own against someone who has managed to overcome Gods as well as Goku’s newest powerful form. Jiren’s calm, unshakable nature would likely frustrate Broly, who depends on rage to fuel his attacks, making Jiren an even greater challenge.

Whis Occasionally Serves As A Trump Card When All Else Fails

Whis smiling and pointing in Dragon Ball Super

Main Abilities

Autonomous Ultra Instinct

Temporal Do-Over

Whis is an Angel who serves as the attendant of Beerus, the God of Destruction of Universe 7. He is known to be even stronger than Beerus, and his skills know no bounds, as Whis sometimes serves as a trump card when all else fails. Despite his carefree and calm demeanor, Whis is one of the most formidable beings in the multiverse. Whis has also demonstrated his ability by fighting and defeating both Goku and Vegeta in the past.

Whis’ use of the Autonomous Ultra Instinct is just one of his strongest abilities, so much so that even Beerus learned this technique from him. On top of this, Whis’s mastery of combat allows him to outmaneuver nearly any opponent with ease. Furthermore, Whis can manipulate time for short durations, making him even stronger. His ability to reverse time is not only useful for correcting mistakes but also for turning the tide of battle. For him, defeating Broly in a fight shouldn’t be much trouble at all. Broly’s brute force would pale in comparison to Whis’s technical superiority and godly abilities.

Gohan Beast Is A True Evolution of Gohan’s Power

Main Abilities

Special Beam Cannon

Ultimate Kamehameha

After spending much of his life focusing on academics and moving away from his Saiyan warrior roots, Gohan surprised fans with a powerful resurgence in Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero. Unleashing a new transformation, dubbed Gohan Beast, this form pushes his power to levels never before seen. Gohan Beast retains his scholarly nature while showcasing the untapped potential he’s had since childhood, fulfilling the promise that Gohan’s power could exceed even Goku’s under the right circumstances.

The transformation draws from Gohan’s deep emotional reserves, particularly his desire to protect his loved ones. His Gohan Beast transformation reawakens the fierce warrior within, blending the intellect of a strategist with the raw force of a Saiyan. With this newfound strength, Gohan stands among the strongest fighters in the universe once more. When confronting an opponent like Broly, Gohan’s ability to tap into this latent power at critical moments would be key to surviving the berserker’s relentless onslaught. Gohan Beast isn’t just a power boost—it’s the culmination of his character development, allowing him to potentially outlast even Broly in a battle of raw power and determination.

Zeno’s Authority Can Erase Entire Universes

Both Zenos erase existence in Dragon Ball Super.

Main Abilities

Erasure

Temporal Manipulation

Zeno, the ruler of all multiverses, is a being of such unfathomable power that even the strongest fighters in existence pale in comparison. His cheerful and childlike demeanor contrasts with his terrifying ability to erase entire universes on a whim. Whether it’s an individual, a planet, or an entire reality, Zeno can eliminate anything he desires with little effort, making him the ultimate authority in the Dragon Ball cosmos.

Zeno’s immense power doesn’t stem from traditional combat prowess but from his omnipotence. He doesn’t engage in physical fights or rely on martial arts—his power is absolute. In a confrontation with Broly, Zeno wouldn’t need to rely on strength or strategy; a simple thought would be enough to erase the legendary Saiyan from existence. Broly, known for his brute force and relentless energy, would have no defense against Zeno’s divine authority. Even the mightiest of attacks or transformations would be irrelevant in the face of Zeno’s universe-erasing powers, making him a being Broly could never hope to defeat, no matter how powerful he becomes.

Characters Who Broly Can Defeat

Goku’s Chances Against Broly Are Still Relatively Low

Main Abilities

Kamehameha

Spirit Bomb

Goku is a Saiyan from Universe 7 who possesses tremendous fighting ability. There doesn’t seem to be any limit to how strong Goku can grow. During the Tournament of Power, Goku managed to gain the powers of Ultra Instinct, and during the Moro arc, he learned how to use the Ultra Instinct Sign at will. With every new challenge he faces, Goku continues to break through his limits, proving that he is always evolving as a fighter.

Strong as he is, Goku’s chances of defeating Broly are still very low. Broly’s raw power and untamed strength seem to overwhelm even Goku’s most advanced forms. Fans think Broly is superior to him in terms of combat, which is actually a good thing because it gives Goku a reason to keep striving for his peak form. Even though Goku thrives on fighting strong opponents, Broly presents a unique challenge due to his ability to grow stronger during battle. That said, there will come a time when Goku is going to surpass Broly. It’s just a matter of time before Goku unlocks a new level of power that could potentially turn the tides in his favor.

Vegeta Will Most Certainly End Up Getting Crushed

Main Abilities

Galick Gun

Big Bang Attack

Vegeta is the Prince of the Saiyans in Universe 7 and one of the strongest characters in the series. He is strong enough to take on Goku in a fight, although the latter appears to be just strong enough to keep Vegeta in permanent second place. Then again, Vegeta was able to put up a decent fight against Jiren during the Tournament of Power. His pride as a Saiyan warrior constantly pushes him to achieve new heights, making him a relentless and powerful fighter.

He even defeated Toppo, a God of Destruction candidate, which shows how far he has come. Unfortunately, Vegeta’s level is defined below that of Broly’s, and no matter how strong Vegeta is right now, he will end up getting crushed. The sheer gap in raw power between him and Broly would be too difficult to overcome, no matter how skilled or determined Vegeta is. That said, fans wonder if Ultra Ego Vegeta could turn the tides of battle in his favor, albeit temporarily. Ultra Ego gives Vegeta the ability to grow stronger as he takes damage, but even this might not be enough against Broly’s unrelenting assault.

Hit’s Time Skip Ability Can Probably Be Overcome By Broly

Hit powering up with his fists raised

Main Abilities

Vital Point Attack

Time-Skip

Universe 6’s best assassin, Hit is a powerful fighter who has fought against the likes of Goku and Vegeta on multiple occasions now. Just like them, he is capable of growing stronger and stronger as the battle progresses. Hit’s calm and calculating nature allows him to assess his opponent’s weaknesses, and his deadly precision has earned him a fearsome reputation across multiple universes. In addition, Hit’s ability allows him to skip time and kill his enemies easily.

However, the chances of this technique working on Broly are quite low. Broly’s chaotic energy and ability to power through nearly any attack make him a dangerous opponent for someone like Hit. Previously, Goku and Jiren had demonstrated their ability to break through Hit’s special technique. Since Broly is evidently stronger than Goku, there’s no reason to doubt that Broly can’t overcome the iconic Time-Skip. While Hit’s tactics and abilities make him a formidable foe, Broly’s overwhelming strength and unpredictability would likely render these tactics ineffective, giving Broly the upper hand.

Toppo Is Inferior To Both Goku And Vegeta

Top, in his God of Destruction form, squeezes Frieza in Dragon Ball Super's Tournament of Power.

Main Abilities

Energy of Destruction

Destructive Fracture

Toppo is also a member of the Pride Troopers, just like Jiren. He is powerful enough to get recommended for the God of Destruction position, which means he is a worthy opponent for Broly. Toppo’s destructive powers and resilience were on full display during the Tournament of Power, showing that he is no ordinary fighter. However, just because he qualifies as a God of Destruction doesn’t necessarily mean that he’s stronger than Broly.

Toppo was definitively proveninferior to Goku and Vegeta during the Tournament of Power, and not even Goku or Vegeta would stand a chance against Broly. Despite Toppo’s potential as a God of Destruction, his strength still falls short when compared to the monstrous power of Broly. In other words, Broly should be several times stronger than him. For now, it is impossible for Broly to lose against Toppo. Even if Toppo were to unleash the full extent of his destructive energy, it’s unlikely that Broly would be phased by it. The power gap between them remains significant, making a victory for Toppo highly improbable.

Piccolo’s Strategy Wouldn’t Be Enough to Win

Piccolo prepares his Special Beam Cannon against Hatchiyack in Dragon Ball: Plan to Eradicate the Saiyans.

Main Abilities

Special Beam Cannon

Regeneration

Piccolo is one of the most brilliant tacticians in Dragon Ball, known for his incredible strategic understanding and adaptability in battle. Throughout the series, Piccolo has repeatedly proven that he can take on more powerful foes by outsmarting them. His ability to analyze his opponents’ weaknesses and formulate complex strategies is a defining trait that has helped him survive and win against overwhelming odds. Piccolo’s most iconic technique, the Special Beam Cannon, is a powerful energy attack capable of penetrating even the strongest defenses. Coupled with his regenerative abilities, which allow him to recover from serious injuries, Piccolo has established himself as a top-tier fighter in the Dragon Ball universe.

Despite this, Piccolo’s power level is still insufficient to stand up to Broly’s raw power. Even though he could draw out the fight by using clever tactics, regeneration, and evasive maneuvers, it would only delay the inevitable. Broly’s unrestrained, explosive growth during battle makes it almost impossible for him to contain or outlast. Piccolo might be able to evade some of Broly’s initial attacks, but Broly’s relentless assault and ever-increasing strength would eventually overwhelm him. The difference in raw physical power between the two is simply too vast, and no amount of strategy or intelligence can bridge that gap.

Frieza’s Ruthlessness Won’t Save Him Against Broly

Main Abilities

Death Beam

Golden Frieza Form

For good reason, Frieza is easily one of the most feared villains in Dragon Ball. His ruthlessness and Golden Frieza transformation have elevated him to a level that rivals even the strongest Saiyans like Goku and Vegeta. As a master tactician and manipulator, Frieza has an uncanny ability to exploit his enemies’ weaknesses, often using his cunning to turn the tide in battle. The Death Beam, his signature attack, is a precise and deadly energy blast capable of taking out opponents before they even know what hit them. In his Golden Form, Frieza’s power is amplified to an extraordinary degree, giving him speed, strength, and durability that can stand up to nearly any fighter in the universe.

However, despite all his enhancements and the Golden Frieza form, Frieza couldn’t stand up to Broly during their encounter in Dragon Ball Super: Broly. Broly’s wild and untamed power completely overwhelmed Frieza, who could only endure a relentless onslaught for over an hour. Despite his cunning and willingness to use dirty tactics, Frieza’s strategic mind is no match for Broly’s ferocious strength and adaptability. In contrast to Frieza’s controlled, calculated fighting style, Broly grows stronger with each passing moment, turning the battlefield into his playground of destruction.

Krillin Might Be Strong, But He’s Still An Ordinary Human

Krillin screams and fires A Kamehameha

Main Abilities

Destructo Disc

Solar Flare

Krillin is a human from Earth and one of the characters who fight to protect the planet from all incoming threats. Despite being human, Krillin has achieved incredible strength through his training with Master Roshi and the other Z Fighters. As a human, Krillin is known to be exceptionally powerful, but he’s always wanted to live a quiet life and doesn’t really like engaging in pointless battles. He has played a key role in many important battles, often using his intelligence and quick thinking to outwit stronger opponents.

Despite his unquestionable strength and fearsome abilities, however, Krillin stands no chance when compared to someone like Broly. Krillin’s bravery and willingness to face powerful enemies are admirable, but the sheer difference in power between him and Broly is insurmountable. For starters, Krillin is a human while Broly is a Saiyan — and an exceptionally talented Saiyan, at that. Broly’s Saiyan bloodline gives him a natural advantage that no amount of human training can match. For Broly, defeating Krillin should be an easy piece of cake. Even Krillin’s best techniques, like the Destructo Disc, would likely have little effect on a powerhouse like Broly.
