10 One Piece Mysteries That Don’t Need To Be Solved

There are hundreds of unsolved mysteries within the One Piece series. With the vast lore of Eiichiro Oda’s magnum opus spanning over 1,110 chapters and counting, however, it remains to be seen if he will answer every question in the final saga. Luffy’s daring journey to find Roger’s hidden treasure has stretched across multiple story arcs in various islands. With that in mind, Oda is a master of worldbuilding and takes great care in crafting interesting histories.

After decades of anticipation, there are certainly puzzles that need to be solved, preferably sooner rather than later. These include the location of Laugh Tale, the actual One Piece itself, the real truth behind the Void Century, and the identity of Imu-sama. However, there are also smaller mysteries that are ripe for speculation. While it would be nice to know, it’s not really necessary and their lack of reveal wouldn’t negatively impact the story in the slightest.

10 Is Queen Actually Franky’s Father?

A Recent Vivre Card Has Sent The Fandom in a Frenzy

The One Piece fandom had a speculative field day with the release of Vivre Card #1309, also known as ”Threatening! The Strong of the New World!!” Oda randomly dropped Queen’s entire backstory into supplementary materials.Queen had a son with an unknown woman 36 years ago, but he left behind said child a decade later. Since these numbers match up with Franky’s birth and date of abandonment, many theorists believe they could be related.

Oda has yet to confirm or deny the rumors, but it doesn’t really matter if Franky is Queen’s son. While it does add some background flavor in world building, Franky and Queen have never interacted in any meaningful way during the Onigashima Raid, nor have there been any hints at their supposed familial ties. Regardless if their relationship is proven true or false, it’s completely inconsequential for the story, but it would still be fun trivia.

9 Why is Enies Lobby Always Sunny?

The Judicial Island Always Sees Daylight

Enies Lobby in broad daylight in One Piece

The One Piece setting is known for really strange quirks that most fans take at face value. Whether it’s humans born with horns, or natural disasters within the Grand Line, the unusual is practically the usual in this series. However, some unexplained occurrences really do stand out. Justice never truly sleeps in Enies Lobby, a judicial island where the sun is always out. For reasons that remain unknown even today, nighttime never seems to occur here.

Oftentimes, the wild and wacky environments are the way they are simply because it’s a fantasy world. There may not be a definitive answer for indefinite sunlight Enies Lobby, but that hasn’t ever stopped fan speculation in the first place. The most popular theory seems to be a Devil Fruit awakening, particularly the Pika Pika no Mi, but this has never been confirmed outright. The real mystery of Enies Lobby seems to be the giant hole in the ocean. Given recent developments with Imu, perhaps that question might be answered eventually.

8 Does Nami Have Any Royal Lineage?

It’s a Common Theory Backed With No Evidence

Nami in One Piece: Stampede with berry/money signs for eyes

Not every main character needs to have royal ancestry in the One Piece series. However, starting with the revelation that Sanji was a member of the Vinsmoke family, it’s not uncommon to have people speculate about the secret origins of the remaining Straw Hats. A semi-popular theory suggests that Nami could have a royal background, mainly due to the dramatic irony of her love for money. Regardless, it wouldn’t really add much of anything.

A recurring theme within the series is that family isn’t necessarily forged by a bloodline. Nami was a war orphan adopted by a Marine officer named Bell-mere, who took great care of her in Cocoyasi Village. The narrative is far better off with Nami being a complete nobody rather than secret nobility. It’s also worth mentioning that Sanji’s backstory already addresses this particular topic. Nami’s real biological parents will likely be unknown figures.

Fans Have Long Speculated The Reason For Their Resemblance

Tashigi glares with two marines in the background in One Piece.

Roronoa Zoro aspires to become the world’s greatest swordsman to honor a childhood dream of Shimotsuki Kuina, who tragically died falling down a flight of stairs before the start of the One Piece series. Interestingly, there is another swordswoman by the name of Tashigi, who bears a strong resemblance to Kuina. Zoro notes the coincidence during his encounter with Tashigi in Loguetown. Nevertheless, a coincidence is all it really is supposed to be.

For decades, fans have wondered if Tashigi and Kuina were either secretly related or even the same person. Considering the fact Oda revealed Zoro’s lineage in a random SBS for Volume 105, not to mention Tashigi’s lack of focus over the years, it seems as though Oda himself doesn’t really care about this supposed connection. In a December 2009 issue of Shonen Jump magazine, he also stated that both characters just happened to look similar.

6 Will Kuro Ever Show Up Again?

The East Blue Villain Remains Unaccounted For

Captain Kuro adjusts his glasses with the heel of his hand in One Piece.

Oda has a habit of rotating his large cast of characters. Several villains from the East Blue saga have reappeared after their introduction, whether it’s Buggy the Clown becoming a major recurring presence or Arlong showing up in Jinbe’s flashbacks. However, one noticeable absence is Kuro, the former captain of the Black Cat Pirates, who attacked Syrup Village. The villain has yet to return, despite Oda’s track record for bringing characters back.

In order to promote One Piece Film: Stampede, Kuro did appear in a non-canon gag manga written by Ryou Nakama, entitled My Plans Never Fail!! He apparently gave up piracy and retired to a secluded island in the East Blue. Kuro was invited to the Pirates Festival, but he declined the offer, thinking it was a trap. Since this isn’t canon source material for the main series, his current whereabouts after Luffy defeated him are still unknown.

5 Who Fathered Makino’s Child?

Oda Says the Baby’s Father is ”That Person”

One Piece fans might remember Makino from the early days of the Romance Dawn arc. She’s the humble bartender of a local bar in Foosha Village. The green-haired woman might as well have been Luffy’s adoptive caretaker during his childhood. At some point in the two-year timeskip, she gave birth to a child with an unknown mate. This makes predicting her potential father a little more difficult, especially since Oda himself is very coy with answers.

Although Red-Haired Shanks only appears in small bursts throughout the plot, his charismatic presence draws attention and keeps him popular with fans.

Vivre Card #0759 only states that Makino’s unknown partner is ”that man.” Given their complete lack of story relevance, the identity of Makino’s child is arguably nothing more than a footnote.Shanks is a very popular suggestion, considering he frequently visits her bar whenever he visits Foosha Village. However, the father could also be a random villager, especially since the digitally colored manga depicts the child’s hair color as brown.

4 What is The Strange Object That Capone Bege Encountered?

The Fire Tank Pirates Seemingly Ran Into Some Trouble After Marineford

Capone Bege and the Fire Tank Pirates in One Piece are gathered around a couch.

The shocking events of the Marineford arc have sent massive waves across the pirating world. One Piece set the stage for a major timeskip in order to advance the story. The Worst Generation all made significant moves, with each of them getting some focus on what they were doing in the New World. The most bizarre incident took place when Capone Bege of the Fire Tank Pirates encountered a massively dark object within the skies.

The gravitational pull of this floating entity lifted Capone’s ship, but what happened afterward remains a mystery, since it’s never referred to again. The unidentified flying object clearly doesn’t have anything to do with his later affiliate Big Mom, either. Unless this happens to be the Ancient Weapon Uranus, fans can simply write this off as nothing more than the New World’s strange occurrences, since Oda did want to lay the groundwork for the highly unusual areas the Straw Hats would later visit after the two-year timeskip.

3 Who Are Luffy’s Actual Mother And Grandmother?

Their Identities Have Never Been So Much As Hinted At

Crocodile produces a small sand tornado in his hand with the Sand-Sand Fruit during One Piece's Summit War.

The golden apple doesn’t fall far from Monkey D. Luffy’s family tree. Every single member is a legendary figure and powerful fighter within their own rights. Garp is the fabled Marine hero who rivaled Gol D. Roger in his prime, while Dragon is the infamous leader of the Revolutionary Army opposed to the World Government. Nevertheless, the One Piece series never makes any direct mention of Luffy’s mother, let alone his own grandmother. These female relatives seem to be missing in the present day.

Whether they’re dead or alive is a riddle for the ages. Luffy doesn’t seem to care, either way, since he considers Dadan his maternal caretaker. He barely acknowledges his own father. Oda could always save the reveal for the endgame, particularly for the backstories of Dragon and Garp. However, even if he never does, the identities of Luffy’s mother and grandmother aren’t imperative for the story. Luffy will always be Luffy, and this lore drop won’t change anything for him personally.

2 What is Behind Zoro’s Missing Eye?

He Seemingly Lost His Left Eye During Mihawk’s Training

Zoro bites his sword, three-sword style fighting technique in One Piece

Perhaps due to the massive popularity of the Naruto series, and the constant use of powerful eye techniques, a vocal minority believe that Zoro might be holding back his true power. During his training with Dracule Mihawk in the timeskip, Zoro seemingly lost the use of his left eye, since a huge scar now runs over it. A very small portion of the fanbase believes that Zoro might someday open his eye to reveal a hidden skill, akin to the famous Sharingan.

Naturally, this is very impractical for several reasons. First and foremost, One Piece is not the Naruto series. The sudden reveal of eye-related superpowers would be straight out of left field, not to mention Zoro definitely would’ve used it against King in the Onigashima Raid. A boring but practical answer is that Dracule took out his eye during a training session, and that Oda wanted to change Zoro’s design since the eye scar looks really cool.

1 Who are the Monsters in the Florian Triangle?

There Are Some Mysteries That Are Better Left Unsolved

From a narrative point of view, sometimes it’s better to leave it up to a viewer’s imagination. The Florian Triangle is a dangerous stretch of sea where many ships go missing. In what is likely the scariest unexplained moment in the One Piece series, Charlotte Lola notices three shadowy figures across the distance from Thriller Bark. Gigantic doesn’t begin to describe these unknown entities, since they completely tower over Gecko Moria’s island-sized ship.

Only seen with red eyes in silhouette form, the Florian Triangle monsters are easily the biggest creatures ever shown in the entire series. Nevertheless, Stephen King’s concept of ”nothing is scarier” definitely applies here. The entire fun of the Florian Triangle lies within mystery, so attempts to spoil the surprise would make these monsters less effective. As long as they remain within the shadows, fans will endlessly speculate about their appearance.
