Before Sailor Moon and her friends are aware of the new threat and danger they’re truly in, Sailor Iron Mouse — maybe one of the worst Sailor Moon villains — attacks during a concert featuring Michiru Kaiou, Haruka Tenou and the Three Lights. As the concert-goers flee from the mechanical mice Sailor Iron Mouse unleashes into the building, Sailor Moon and her friends rally, fully intending to stop the mayhem and face their new threat head-on.

Just as Sailor Iron Mouse launches her signature attack, Galactica Crunch, Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune leap into the fray. It takes the combined strength of both Space Turbulence and Submarine Violon Tide to thwart this new enemy’s ability, signaling the gravity and strength of this latest threat. However, this fight ends quickly thanks to the Sailor Starlights — new Sailor Guardians that, at this point, could either be friend or foe — and their devastating attacks.

Hailing from the same planet as Luna and Artemis, and with a rich lore that makes her one of the most underrated Sailor Guardians, Sailor Tin Nyanko attacks Sailor Moon’s feline companions intending to steal away their Star Seeds. Having already lost Sailor Mercury, Sailor Jupiter, Sailor Mars and Sailor Venus, a raw Sailor Moon leaps in between them, taking the brunt of Sailor Tin Nyanko’s attack to spare Luna and Artemis. Diana, Luna and Artemis’ daughter, likewise leaps into the fight, becoming severely injured in the process.

While perhaps not the most powerful opponent Sailor Moon faces, Sailor Tin Nyanko reveals the dastardly actions of Sailor Galaxia: she destroys planets, ending their Sailor Guardians and then steals their Sailor Crystals for herself. The bracelets she places upon her subordinates bind them to her will, forcing them to carry out her orders. The information Sailor Moon gleans from Sailor Tin Nyanko, plus the lengths she’s willing to endure to ensure no more of her friends perish at the hands of the Shadow Galactica, earn this fight a place among the best brawls in the two-part film.

After inadvertently revealing his cosmic energy by signing, Kou Seiya draws the attention of Sailor Aluminum Siren straight to him and Usagi. The other two members of the Three Lights, Kou Yaten and Kou Taiki, arrive just in time for all three to throw themselves in front of Usagi, intent on defending the princess just as Sailor Aluminum Siren strikes. Sailor Mercury and Sailor Jupiter also arrive, blocking Sailor Aluminum Siren’s attack, but still left unsure if their threat is Sailor Aluminum Siren, the Three Lights, or both.

Usagi clears up any confusion, but the precious moments spent in explanation allow Sailor Aluminum Siren to wrap a wave of ocean blue energy around Sailor Mercury and Sailor Mars. Despite Sailor Uranus’ attempts at releasing her comrades, and before Sailor Moon can unleash an attack of her own upon the bindings, Sailor Aluminum Siren destroys Sailor Mercury and Sailor Jupiter in a single, devastating shock. Watching the two Inner Guardians turn into dust and blow away with the wind leaves Sailor Moon and viewers devastated, conveying the dire stakes of this new war Sailor Moon finds herself in.

After confronting the Sailor Starlights about their intentions, allegiance and purpose on Earth, Sailor Venus and Sailor Mars detect dark energy near the Hikawa Shrine where Sailor Mars — in her human identity as Rei Hino — lives and works. Sailor Lead Crow arrives at the shrine, looking for Phobos and Deimos, the twin crows that act as companions and helpers to Rei. Upon her prompting, Phobos and Deimos transform into their human forms thanks to their Star Seeds, which Sailor Lead Crows tells the two she has come to collect in the name of Sailor Galaxia.

Sailor Mars and Sailor Venus arrive just as Sailor Lead Crow kills Phobos and Deimos, stealing their Star Seeds. When Sailor Mars goes to attack, she’s captured by Sailor Lead Crow. Sailor Moon’s timely arrival, thanks to a heartfelt cry from Sailor Venus, and her signature attack liberates Sailor Venus. However, Sailor Galaxia appears and ends the remaining two of the Inner Guardians, wreaking emotional havoc on Sailor Moon. The culmination of Sailor Venus, Sailor Mars, Phobos and Deimos’ destruction reinforces that the Shadow Galactica intends to completely eradicate all those close to Sailor Moon, with none left to stand with her.

After losing the Sailor Starlights to a ferocious attack from Sailor Chi and Sailor Phi, Sailor Moon, Princess Kakyuu and Sailor Chibi-Chibi continue on to the stronghold of Sailor Galaxia within the center of Sagittarius Zero Star. When they come across a desolate graveyard filled with tombstones of fallen Sailor Guardians, Sailor Heavy Metal Papillon appears, capturing our remaining trio and lashing them onto crucifixes with her thorny plants.

As the last Sailor Animamate guarding Sailor Galaxia on Sagittarius Zero Star, Sailor Heavy Metal Papillon could easily be considered the strongest Sailor Animamate. Her abilities to command the butterflies swarming over the graveyard and her mastery of pyrokinesis speak to her brutal aptitude for combat. And her easy capture of Sailor Moon, Princess Kakyuu and Sailor Chibi-Chibi speak to her power, plus allow Sailor Chibi Moon and the Sailor Quartet their moment to shine with a last-pinch rescue and a truly cool and colorful attack.

Sailor Lethe

Princess Kakyuu and her Sailor Starlights guide Sailor Moon and Sailor Chibi-Chibi to Sagittarius Zero Star, the base of operations of Shadow Galactica’s leader, Sailor Galaxia. Upon arriving at Zero Star and passing through the planet’s intricate and mysterious gates, they meet a cloaked figure standing aboard a small boat on a river made of sand. She introduces herself as Lethe, their guide across the desert river, but unbeknownst to Sailor Moon and her companions, Lethe is actually Sailor Lethe, one of Sailor Galaxia’s guards.

As Sailor Lethe pulls Sailor Moon and her friends underneath the River Lethe, they slowly begin to lose their memories. This loss bleeds over into their sense of identity and motivation, with Usagi forgetting her purpose, Mamoru and the friends she came to Sagittarius Zero Star to rescue. While perhaps more mental and cerebral than other fights up to this point, this battle of wills and memories showcases Usagi’s convictions in doing the right thing and in saving her loved ones.

After the timely arrival of Sailor Chibi Moon and the Sailor Quartet help to defeat Sailor Heavy Metal Papillon, Sailor Phi and Sailor Chi make their reappearance, determined to stop the heroes before they can reach the inner sanctum of Sailor Galaxia’s domain. Motivated to avenge the Sailor Starlights who previously fell to the Star Gardener duo, Princess Kakyuu transforms into Sailor Kakyuu for this encounter, in a move different from the original anime. And now that they’ve arrived from the 30th century to lend a helping hand, Sailor Chibi Moon and the Sailor Quartet join the fray as well.

As proper Sailor Guardian’s without the use of pilfered Sailor Crystals, Sailor Phi and Sailor Chi command their abilities flawlessly and remain completely resolute in their devotion to Sailor Galaxia. From their interactions with the Sailor Animamates during previous scenes, viewers know that Sailor Phi and Sailor Chi rank higher on the pecking order, which probably translates to power as well. The epic clash between such devout Guardians to Sailor Galaxia and Sailor Kakyuu’s grief at losing the Sailor Starlights makes the defeat of Sailor Phi and Sailor Chi all the sweeter.

Having lost Princess Kakyuu to Sailor Phi and Sailor Chi, Sailor Moon continues onward toward Sailor Galaxia with renewed purpose. However, before she can ascend the steps to where Sailor Galaxia awaits, her friends seemingly appear before her. At first relieved to see her friends, they attack mercilessly, revealing themselves to be nothing more than puppets created and controlled by Sailor Galaxia. Devastated and heartbroken at having to fight creatures wearing the faces and voices of her dear friends, Sailor Moon emotionally struggles with fighting back.

Eventually, encouragement from Sailor Chibi Moon reaches Sailor Moon’s heart, motivating her to go on the offensive against the puppets. The emotional weight of this fight is felt keenly by Sailor Moon, but also by the audience too. Seeing the havoc and ruin released by her friends solidifies the power of the Sailor Guardians, but also highlights Sailor Moon’s strength of character and determination as well. In a heartbreaking contest of wills, Sailor Moon finds the motivation to continue onward toward her true friends, highlighting the reason why she deserves to wield the mantle of Sailor Moon.

Sailor Moon

When Sailor Moon chases Sailor Galaxia to the Galaxy Cauldron, she realizes that Sailor Galaxia has been a puppet herself, manipulated and tricked by the embodiment of evil and disorder in the galaxy: Chaos. While Chaos lacks a physical form, the ominous cloud and the piercing eyes convey Chaos’ character, revealing the vastness, power and primordial strength of such a being. Chaos callously does away with Sailor Galaxia when she no longer proves useful, then sets its sights on using Sailor Moon’s power to absorb the Galaxy Cauldron.

After reminding herself what she’s fighting for, and receiving some comforting words from an awestruck Sailor Galaxia before she vanishes, Sailor Moon resolves to do all that she can to save her friends while keeping the Galaxy Cauldron in one piece. Like Lethe before her, this fight with Chaos takes place more in a battle of wills rather than physical blows, once again showing that Sailor Moon’s resolve can even withstand and surpass even such all-powerful creatures such as Chaos.

Sailor Moon

As the heretofore believed leader of the Shadow Galactica, Sailor Galaxia is — at first — considered to be the ultimate enemy and final combatant standing between Sailor Moon and restoring her friends’ Star Seeds and Sailor Crystals. The gravity of that situation alone makes Sailor Moon’s entrance into the inner building all the more impactful, but her determination to win ignites even further when Sailor Moon sees the gold-plated Sailor Galaxia standing in front of the container holding the Star Seeds and Sailor Crystals of her friends and allies alongside a puppet Mamoru. To add the proverbial cherry on top, Sailor Galaxia debases Mamoru in front of Sailor Moon by manipulating him into kissing her, prompting their fight to start with a bang.

Unlike most other fights leading up to this point, the fight between Sailor Galaxia and Sailor Moon uses more motion. In other fights, the characters largely stand still as they direct their attacks toward their opponents, but in this epic clash, Sailor Moon flies away and dodges homing attacks before rounding with her own counterattack. The fluidity of this fight, the sheer awesomeness of the attacks and the anticipation that’s been building during the entire two-part film, catapults this clash to the forefront of fights.
